2 More Generals Off to College

 Jerrell WhitePierre Hawkes

The Dinwiddie Generals football team had a record 7 players sign on National Signing Day about a month ago, and now two more players have made decisions on their football futures within the past weeks, upping that total to a whopping 9 players.

All-State WR Jerrell White will be attending Hinds Community College in Mississippi.  White originally committed to Marshall University but will need to go the JUCO(junior college) route first.  White was a 2-time All-State selection - as a punt/kick returner in 2007 and as a WR in 2008.  He snagged 60 catches this season for 887 yards and 14 TDs despite missing the Generals first game of the season.  He finished his career at Dinwiddie with 46 total TDs and 3,889 all-purpose yards.

Hinds CC is a traditional junior college (NJCAA) football power.  In the past, they have produced NFL players like Fred Smoot, Brad Banks(Heisman Trophy runner-up in 2000 while at Iowa), and Jerome McDougle.

The Generals other recent signee is CB Pierre Hawkes.  Hawkes signed with the New Mexico Military Institute located in Roswell, New Mexico.  The school is a two-year junior college that is known for placing athletes at 4-year programs.  Current Chicago Bears CB Zachary Bowman attended NMMI before moving on to The University of Nebraska.

Interestingly, former Dallas Cowboys QB and 1963 Heisman Trophy winner Roger Staubach also attended and played football for NMMI for one season before playing for Navy.  Other famous alumni include former ABC News anchor Sam Donaldson and actor Owen Wilson(Wedding Crashers).

Hawkes was a unanimous 1st Team All-District selection as well as a 1st Team All-Region selection this season at CB.  This season for the Generals he made 82 tackles and had 3 INTs, while being known for his ability to make big hits on unsuspecting WR’s.  Hawkes was a 3-year starter and chosen as a captain his senior year.

Dinwiddie head coach Billy Mills believes both White and Hawkes can play at the JUCO level and move on to Divison 1 programs down the road.

The record 9 college signees shows just how far the football program has come under Coach Mills.  For the Dinwiddie coach though, it’s all about his players - “All 9 of them definitely earned it.” said Mills.  “Four years of hard work…it’s nice to see them be able to move on and keep playing football while getting college paid for.”
