March 08 Update

March Update

First of all I would like to thank Lou Edwards for the creation of this site and the upkeep, he has volunteered his time and efforts over the past 7 months and everyone in the program truly appreciates what you have done for Dinwiddie Football. I would also like to thank all the parents, relatives, faculty, and friends of the program who participated in our first two fundraisers of the year (Lift-A-Thon and UnderArmor challenge) both were a huge success. Also thanks to those in the community who have provided my players part time work to help fund their camps and other fees that come up through the year, and a special thank you to the individuals who made the substantial donations to our football program this past month, they will definitely help us in the upgrading of Dinwiddie football.

March Announcements:

Congratulations to the following players who made the Touchdown Club of Richmond All Metro Team for the 2007 season announced in January: Dequan Coles (1st team WR); Adam Morgan (2nd team QB); Bradley Johnson (2nd team LB); Jerrell White (2nd team WR); Wilkie Cox (HM DB); and Nick Watts (HM OL).

The coaching staff had a busy offseason to date as they spoke at both the Central Virginia Coaches Clinic in Charlottesville and the Touchdown Club of Richmond Coach of the Year clinic at Meadowbrook HS. The offensive staff met with Coach Franklin (Auburn’s OC) and other system members at the TFS Seminar in Dallas, TX in February and attended spring practice at Auburn University over spring break. The defensive staff attended the Frank Glazier clinic in Atlanta, the University of Richmond’s spring practice and will attend William and Mary’s spring practice next week.

You saw on the opening page Dequan Coles scholarship signing to the Citadel but we have a few more that have or are close to making a commitment to play football next fall. Andrew Wagy a 2 way starter at both LB and OL and defensive lineman Steffon Luccess have committed to Ferrum College.

All district and all tri-cities defensive lineman/linebacker Jimmie Simmons is close to a decision to Bridgewater College. All district and all tri-cities defensive back/running back Wilkie Cox has a tryout at Hargrave Military Academy in April but has narrowed his schools down to Kentucky State, Chowan, and North Carolina Weslyan.

The class of 2009 may be the biggest recruited class in Dinwiddie history as we have several juniors that are receiving a ton of interest. Bradley Johnson leads the way with four current offers (West Virginia, Duke, East Carolina, and Richmond) with more to come. He has also taken an unofficial visit to Tennessee and will visit Maryland soon.

Also receiving much attention as anticipated is record setting QB Adam Morgan who with a few state records in his sites will have a busy June as attends several camps to showcase his ability, he is busy with baseball right now but has visited both William and Mary and Richmond over the past couple of months. Two other Juniors that are getting a lot of interest are WR Sam Haskins and OL Nick Watts who have had unofficial visits to ECU, Richmond, and William and Mary.

Punter/Kicker Chad Jones recently attended Khol’s professional kicking camp, and through his performance was invited to the National Scholarship Showcase camp in Chicago later this spring. Pierre Hawkes, David Abbey, Lavonte Johnson, and Jerrell White are also being recruited and with a strong off-season on and off the field should have an opportunity to go on and play ball should they choose to do so.

Bradley Johnson, Sam Haskins, and Nick Watts attended the Nike SPARQ combine in Charlotte, NC on March 22. There were around 500 in attendance to the event and we had two of the top performers in the entire combine with Bradley Johnson gaining a SPARQ rating of 82.6 and making the all combine team at linebacker and Sam Haskins who had a SPARQ rating of 90.63 and had the third best SPARQ rating by a receiver in the entire combine. All three and QB Adam Morgan have been invited to the invite only NIKE camp in Charlotte on May 2nd, Adam Morgan has also been invited to the Regional Elite 11 QB camp at Penn State the following Saturday.

We also have five underclassmen who will attend the National Underclassmen Combine in Sterling, VA on April 20th. Sophomores Jason Ampy (5′9? 185 lb LB) and Quintaze Jackson (5′10? 170 lb WR) and freshmen Chris Hall (6′3? 190 lb QB/REC), Trey Gardner (6′5? 180 lb WR), Cory Marshall (6′2? 245 lb DL); and Cordell Gibbs (5′9? 165 lb DB).
