A little over three years ago, Dinwiddie football coach Billy Mills handed over the reins of his fast-paced offense to a fiery young freshman with a rocket arm - 4.6 miles later(7.4 kilometers, if you prefer the metric system), it’s hard to argue with the decision.
Yep, 4.6 MILES…you see, when it comes to tallying Dinwddie QB Adam Morgan’s passing stats, measuring them in yards just doesn’t give you the full effect.
“We go as he goes”, said Mills when asked about Morgan’s importance to his team. “He’s been the catalyst in turning this program around.”
Morgan’s impressive career stats have him on the verge of breaking several Virginia state records. As the Generals enter their first round Regional Playoff game against Douglas Freeman, the Generals “field general” is only 8 completions away from the state record of 610 and only 3 passing touchdowns away from the state record of 103. With a solid performance, Morgan may eclipse both records in his next game. He will likely need a Dinwiddie playoff win and two impressive outings to break the state passing yard record of 8731. Currently, Morgan is 623 yards shy of the record with 8108.
Even with all the attention paid to the stats and records, Morgan has one goal as a leader on this Dinwiddie squad - a run through the Division 5 Playoffs. Coach Mills is confident in his quarterback, “Adam’s a winner. He believes he can win every time he steps on the field. Even when we were struggling a couple years back, he approached every game the same way - to win.”
Mills noticed that attitude the first time Morgan took over the offense - 36 games ago. “Adam came in Game 6 of his Freshman year and suddenly our offense started putting up points”, said Mills, “He’s a coach’s dream. A true football player.”
So far this season, Morgan has had the best season of his career. He’s sliced and diced opposing defense while completing 155 of 246 passes (63%) for 2455 yards and 37 TDs. Adam’s also been a force on the ground as the Generals leading rusher with 377 yards on 77 carries and 5 TDs.
What makes Morgan’s statistical explosion even more impressive is that he racked up these eye-popping numbers despite sitting out the 2nd half in 5 of the Generals 10 games because of blowout s on the scoreboard.
Off the football field, Morgan also excels in the classroom as a member of the National Honor Society who carries a 3.85 GPA.
Come watch Morgan and the rest of the Dinwiddie Generals make a push through the playoffs. Who knows…? You might even get to see a piece of Virginia high school football history in the process!
Following a postponement this past Friday, the Generals will take on Douglas Freeman (7-3) Monday November 17th in the first round of the Central Region Division 5 Playoffs. If the Generals win, they will then play the winner of the Monacan-Hanover game on Saturday November 22nd at 1 pm at Dinwiddie High School in the Central Region Final.
