1st Quarter Dominance Continues in 41-14 Win

To say the Dinwiddie Generals have dominated the 1st quarter this season is an understatement. Through 7 games this season, the Generals have now outscored their opponents 105-0 in the 1st quarter.

Dinwiddie used another fast start this past Friday against Petersburg, jumping out to a 15-0 lead in the game’s opening quarter.

The scoring started when QB Adam Morgan hit Jerrell White in stride over the middle on a 3rd and long play just minutes into the game. After making the catch, White made several Petersburg defenders miss, picked up several key blocks, and used his speed to race into the end zone for a 59-yard touchdown.

Later in the quarter a 44-yard toss from Morgan to WR Terron Adams would set up a Mark Beville 4-yard touchdown run giving the Generals a 13-0 lead.

On the next drive, a sack by Dinwiddie DE Deonte Chambliss on 3rd down would force a Petersburg punt from their own end zone. After the snap on 4th down sailed over punter Raliek Green’s head and out the back of the end zone for a safety, the Generals led 15-0.

Dinwiddie Coach Billy Mills attributed the team’s 1st quarter success to their aggressive attitude, “We preach aggressiveness and playing to win to our players.”

Mills also talked about the effect scoring early has on his team, “When we take the ball right down the field early and score it gives everyone a boost of confidence…it also makes our opponents have to play from behind.”

Despite the fast start by the Generals, an improved Petersburg squad hung tough in the 2nd quarter. In fact, a 1-yard TD run by Petersburg QB Raliek Green cut the Generals lead to 15-6 going into the locker room at the half.

It didn’t take long for the Generals to answer in the 2nd half, as the Dinwiddie defense forced a quick 3-and-out. 3 plays later, Morgan hit Adams on a quick slant that Adams turned into a 27-yard score. Chad Jones’ extra point made the score 22-6.

More punting problems late in the 3rd quarter gave the Generals great field position and set up a Bradley Johnson 3-yard scoring plunge that gave Dinwiddie a 28-6 lead. Later in the 3rd, a Petersburg fumble again gave the Generals a short field. Dinwiddie capitalized with a score when 250-pound defensive tackle Corey Marshall took a handoff at FB and rumbled 3 yards into the end zone a la William “The Refrigerator” Perry.

An 8-yard strike from Morgan to WR Sam Haskins would seal the deal early in the 4th quarter and give the Generals a 41-6 lead.

On offense the Generals were led by QB Adam Morgan who completed 9 of 20 passes for 144 yards and 4 TDs despite the cold and rainy conditions. Morgan also led the Generals running attack, gaining 60 yards on 11 carries.

The Dinwiddie defense came through with another strong performance limiting Petersburg to only 169 yards of total offense. Bradley Johnson led the Generals with 7 tackles, while DE Deonte Chambliss had 4 tackles and a sack.

For Petersburg, Joshua Allen led the way on the ground with 115 yards on 13 carries.

The 41-14 victory improves Dinwiddie’s record to 6-1 this season with a 4-0 record in District play. The loss drops Petersburg to 4-3.

This Friday Prince George (3-4) travels to Dinwiddie (6-1) to take on the Generals. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
