New names. New faces. Even some bright and shiny new lights. While many things have changed for the Dinwiddie football team since last year, the results were very much the same as the Generals started off the 2009 season with a 36-7 home victory over Poquoson.
The Generals jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when junior QB Chris Hall connected with junior WR Trey Gardner for a 20-yard TD. A 33-yard pass from Hall to Tavares Johnson two plays earlier set up the score. The Generals bumped their lead to 14-0 in the 2nd quarter when Hall bolted off tackle and down the Dinwiddie sideline on a 60-yard touchdown jaunt.
Despite finding themselves in an early hole, Poquoson answered right back by going to their bag of tricks and connecting on a 38-yard TD pass to WR Chad Pinder from HB Luke Pinder to make it 14-7.
Despite controlling the game for much of the first half, Dinwiddie entered the locker room leading just 14-7, but a big play from the Generals defense just 2 minutes into the 2nd half would quickly change that. Under heavy pressure from Dinwiddie DE Corey Marshall, Poquoson QB Tee McConnell flung a pass into the arms of Dinwiddie DE Brian Belangia who snatched it and raced 33 yards for his first career TD to give the Generals a 22-7 lead. The quick strike score changed the momentum of the game and left Poquoson trying to play catch up. That was a difficult task against a Dinwiddie defense paced by Belangia and Marshall, both of whom had monster games for the Generals.
Belangia, a senior, finished with 2 sacks and the INT return for a TD, while Marshall dominated while tallying 12 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT, and 2 pass deflections.
The Generals would pull away in the 4th quarter when Hall found WR Drakar Harvell in the endzone from 7 yards out to make it 29-7. They would put the game on ice later when freshman RB Micah McDainel rambled 20 yards up the middle for a TD. It was an impressive Dinwiddie debut for McDaniel as he racked up 104 yards rushing on 13 carries.
The same was true of Hall in his debut as the 6-foot-4 220-pound junior QB finished 16-for-28 for 248 yards and 2 TDs. Hall also finished with 89 yards rushing on 10 carries.
Hall’s main targets were senior speedster Quintaze Jackson, who made 7 catches for 87 yards, and junior Trey Gardner who had 4 grabs for 88 yards and a TD.
