While the Dinwiddie offense is known for it’s prowess throwing the football, the Generals also have a solid stable of running backs that help keep things balanced, while at the same time keeping opposing defenses off balance.
Two 10th-graders lead the way in the backfield for the Generals this season, each with their own unique set of talents.
Mark Beville gives the Generals the quickness and speed they need in the backfield in their spread attack. Beville transferred into the Dinwiddie program this offseason and the Generals coaches were excited with what they saw from him. Unfortunately, a foot injury in the preseason set him back and forced him to miss some games early in the season.
Since recovering, Beville has assumed his role in the backfield and become a factor in the Dinwiddie offense. In 6 games, Beville has carried the ball 40 times for 327 yards for an astounding average of 8.2 yards per carry. He’s also been effective near the goal line with 6 rushing TD’s and 1 receiving TD.
Dinwiddie Head Coach Billy Mills believes Beville is an exciting back with a bright future. “He was hurt early on, but he’s bounced back nicely and been able to fit right into what we do on offense.”
As a compliment to Beville, the Generals have 6-foot-4 215-pound Chris Hall. Hall is the Generals version of “Slash”, as in RB-slash-WR-slash-QB (RB/WR/QB). Hall gives the Generals a more physical presence out of the backfield and also has the ability to provide the Generals with flexibility because of his ability to also line up as a WR and catch the football out of the backfield.
After starting the season as the Generals backup QB, Hall has worked his way onto the field as the season has progressed. His intelligence and attention to detail has made the transition that much easier.
“He’s been amazing, especially since he’s been able to do it all with very little preparation”, said Coach Mills.
So far this season Hall has carried the football 26 times for 130 yards and 3 TDs. He’s also snagged 12 passes for 125 yards and 2 TD’s.
Hall’s experience this year in various roles should help prepare him for next season when he will likely be the Generals new starting QB. “The varsity playing experience will definitely help Chris. He’s not going to step in their (next season) at QB and be “shocked” because of everything he’s experienced this year”, said Coach Mills.
Senior Raheem Jones is another explosive back in the Generals backfield who gives them added depth at the position. When called upon this season, Jones has responded with a 7.8 yards per carry average and 1 rushing TD.
“Raheem has a great attitude.” said Coach Mills, “He’s stepped in and played well when he’s been called upon.” Jones is also a solid contributor for the Generals on special teams as well.
As the Generals get ready to make a run through this year’s Playoffs, the ability to run the football will become more and more of a factor. With this talented group of backs, the Generals should be in good shape.
