It’s almost as if it’s become a race to the endzone.
Over the last 7 weeks, the Dinwiddie Generals offense seems to get on the scoreboard quicker and quicker every week. This past Friday against Prince George, the Generals used another quick scoring burst to set the tone on Homecoming.
The Generals jumped out to a 7-0 a mere 59 seconnds into the game when RB Mark Beville scampered in on a 4-yard TD run.
Dinwiddie Head Coach Billy Mills credits the team’s aggressive attitude for it’s first possession success. “Our kids have bought into the fact that we are going to come out and attack”, said Coach Mills.
The Dinwiddie offense likes to get rolling early, running plays from a 15-play script the team puts in place during the week of practice leading up to the game. Although scripting their early offense has played a role, Coach Mills still believes the real key to success is his players and their mindset. “It’s not the plays, it’s the attitude of the kids. They get the ball and want to go down and score.”
Despite finding themselves in an early hole, an improved Prince George team wasn’t ready to fold early on. The Royals answered with a 7-play, 60-yard drive of their own, but had to settle for a Thomas Mason 37-yard field goal to cut the Dinwiddie lead to 7-3.
Once again, the Generals offense took the field looking to score quickly…and they did. This time it took only 38 seconds, as Adam Morgan hit a streaking Terron Adams down the middle of the field for an 80-yard TD to give Dinwiddie a 13-3 lead.
The Generals next possession took a little longer than the first 2, but ended the same way when Morgan hit sophomore Chris Hall on a 5-yard slant for a TD to give the Generals a 20-3 lead. Hall was the star of the drive making 3 catches for 29 yards and also adding an 8-yard run to help march the Generals down the field.
Later in the quarter, a Terron Adams interception would give Dinwiddie the ball at midfield. The Generals offense took advantage as Morgan found WR Quintaze Jackson for 23 yards and then hit WR Jerrell White on a 26-yard corner route that took the Generals down to the 1-yard line. Beville would punch it in on the next play for his 2nd TD run of the night to bump the Dinwiddie lead to 27-3.
A late Prince George drive just before the half was thwarted by the Generals defense when senior LB Bradley Johnson intercepted a pass at the 2 yard line to keep the Royals out of the endzone.
Early on in the 2nd half, the Generals took a commanding 34-3 lead when Morgan dropped back and found White wide open in the end zone from 8 yards out. The Royals would answer with a scoring drive of their own to cut the Dinwiddie lead to 34-10, but any thoughts of a miracle comeback quickly went out the window when Adams fielded the kickoff at his own 9-yard line and scampered 91 yards down the Prince George sideline for a touchdown to make it 41-10.
Another Chris Hall touchdown at the start of the 4th quarter, this time on a 5-yard TD run, capped the scoring for the evening.
The Dinwiddie offense had one of their best games of the season - racking up 464 yards of total offense. QB Adam Morgan led the aerial attack going 16-22 for 261 yards and 3 TDs. On the ground, the sophomore duo of Beville and Hall led the way for the Generals. Beville finished with 9 carries for 86 yards and 2 TDs, while Hall carried 4 times for 42 yards and a TD, while also adding a receiving TD.
Jerrell White led Dinwiddie with 6 catches for 64 yards and a TD.
Defensively, the Generals put the pressure on the Royals all night long and forced 3 INTs in the process. Sophomore DT Corey Marshall had one of the finest defensive performances by a Dinwiddie player in recent memory racking up 16 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, and a sack in the victory. Junior DE Brian Belangia also stood out with 5 tackles and 2 sacks for the Generals.
The impressive Homecoming win makes Dinwiddie 7-1 this season with a 5-0 record in the Central District. Prince George falls to 3-5 with the loss.
