Following their 12-1 season and State Semi-Finals appearance, several Dinwiddie players were rewarded with individual recognition on the All Central Region team.

The Generals landed 4 players on the All Central 1st Team Offense – LT Denny Vaughan, RB Andre Thweatt, TE Trey Gardner, and WR Drakar Harvell.

On the defensive side of the football, the Generals were represented by 2 players – DE Corey Marshall and LB Andre Thweatt. Thweatt’s selection as a 1st Team All Region on both sides of the football was particularly impressive. He was the only player in the Central Region to be honored in this manner.

Dinwiddie head coach Billy Mills was chosen as the Central Region’s Division 5 Coach of the Year.

The Central Region Offensive Player of the Year Award went to Hermitage QB Brendan Riddick. Hermitage LB Curtis Grant was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year.

Representing the Generals on the All Region 2nd Team were QB Chris Hall, CB Brandon Taylor and DT Diante Monroe. Also selected were 1st Teamers Corey Marshall and Drakar Harvell. Marshall was chosen 2nd team for his efforts on offense at guard, while Harvell was named 2nd team as a kick returner.

Dinwiddie center Taquan Kates was also recognized with an Honorable Mention All Region selection.

The Generals also had 3 players recognized for their combined efforts on the field and in the classroom as Marshall, Taylor, and Kates were all named to the Central Region All Academic Team.

The Dinwiddie Generals moved to 3-0 Friday evening in their home-opener against Greensville by a score of 35-6.

The Dinwiddie Generals moved to 3-0 Friday evening in their home-opener against Greensville by a score of 35-6.

Dinwiddie jumped out to the early 7-0 lead on a Chris Hall 5-yd TD run on the game’s opening drive. The scoring stalled for both teams until the beginning of the 2nd quarter when Dinwiddie RB Andre Thweatt broke a 46-yard TD run right thru the heart of the Greensville defense to make the score 14-0.

The Generals carried that lead into the locker room at halftime, but Greensville was not ready to just hand over the game in the 2nd half. Greensville WR Russell Gillus caught a short screen pass and used his speed to turn into into a 64-yard reception that moved Greensville down to the Generals 1-yard line. They would score a play later to make the score 14-6.

Special teams and defense would help the Gens take the game over in the 3rd quarter though. As a blocked punt midway thru the 3rd set up a 3-yard TD run by Hall to make it 21-6.

At the end of the 3rd with Greensville pinned in their own territory, Dinwiddie DB Drakar Harvell would jump in front of a Greensville pass and scamper 38 yards with it for a TD to bump the Dinwiddie lead to 28-6 and effectively put the game out of reach.

Later on in the 4th, freshman RB Sadarius Williams would put the game out of reach with a 13-yard TD run up the middle.

Once again, the Dinwiddie defense played aggressively forcing 6 turnovers on the night, scoring once and setting up another score.

The win moves the Generals to 3-0 as they enter their bye week. Next up for the Generals is a road game at Colonial Heights on October 1. The loss moves Greensville to 1-2 this season.

The Dinwiddie Generals started the 2010 football season with a pair of impressive road victories.

The Dinwiddie Generals started the 2010 football season with a pair of impressive road victories.

First was a 30-10 victory over Poquoson. The Generals offense set the tone in the first half after a slow start. A 90-yard TD pass from Chris Hall to Drakar Harvell got the Gens going and after that they never looked back.

Despite trailing 16-0 at the half, Poquoson came out in the 2nd half looking to score an upset in their home opener. When a TD and 2-point conversion cut the Dinwiddie lead to 16-8, it looked like they might have grabbed the momentum. But again for the Generals, Harvell was there to make a big play when they needed it, taking the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the end zone. The long TD return took the air out of the Poquson fans and players and bumped the Generals lead back up to 15.

Later on it would be the Dinwiddie defense that put the game on ice when senior FS Tavares Johnson jumped in front of a Poquson pass and galloped 55 yards for a TD to make it 30-10.

Harvell was the star of the game, making 6 catches for 146 yards and a TD, plus the game-changing kickoff return TD. Sophomore WR Darius Hawkins also had a big game making 5 catches for 125 yards.

On the road again against perennial Central Region power Varina, the Generals used a solid ground game and a stifling defense to upset the Blue Devils on their home field 24-21.

The Generals took the opening kickoff and marched down the field for a TD on a 6-yard run by QB Chris Hall . Later in the 2nd quarter, a 26-yard FG by Scott Thompson made it 10-0.

The Generals defense continued to slow down Varina while also forcing several turnovers. One of those turnovers, an interception by DE Elmondo King on a batted ball by DE Corey Marshall set the Generals up on the the Varina 2-yard line. Another Chris Hall TD run on the next play made the score 17-0.

Varina fought back in the 4th quarter on their home field, but a late interception by Dinwiddie CB Cordell Gibbs again set the Generals up for a TD and effectively put the game out of reach.

RB Andre Thweatt carried the ball 15 times for 75 yards and a TD. Hall ran 19 times for 52 yards and 2 TDs. Harvell had another solid game with 6 catches for 73 yards.

Defensively the Generals forced 3 turnovers on the night and slowed down the potent Varina running attack all evening long.

Thru the first 2 games the defense has played well, showing the ability to stop the run and fly to the football and force turnovers. LB Andre Thweatt and DE Corey Marshall have led the way for the Generals.

Thweatt has been extremely impressive so far recording 41 tackles in the first two contests, including a school-record 23 tackles in the season opener at Poquoson. Marshall has put pressure on opposing QB’s and given the Generals a consistent pass rush. Fellow D-lineman Diante Monroe and Robert Tanner have also been stout up front for the Gens.

The Generals will play their first home game of the season this Friday, September 17 against Greensville(1-1). Kickoff is at 7 pm.

Special thanks to Nora Davis for all the excellent pictures!

It's been a busy week already this week for the Dinwiddie Generals football program as Dinwiddie seniors Corey Marshall and Chris Hall both verbally committed to Virginia Tech.

It’s been a busy week already this week for the Dinwiddie Generals football program as Dinwiddie seniors Corey Marshall and Chris Hall both verbally committed to Virginia Tech.

Hall announced his decision on Monday morning.

The Hokies are recruiting Hall as an athlete, specifically to play TE. Hall played QB last season for the Generals.

Marshall made it a double take for the Hokies when he made his announcement Tuesday evening on Comcast Sports Net’s “Washington Post Live”. Marshall teased viewers by narrowing his choices to Virginia Tech and Virginia, before ultimately choosing the Hokies at the very end of the broadcast.

Marshall was recently named to the Rivals 250 List and is one of the nation’s most highly-recruited DE’s. Last season he posted 112 tackles and 21 TFL’s. In his sophomore season, he made 122 tackles while also registering 11 sacks and 17 TFL’s.

Congratulations to both of these young men and their families.

Two of the most recognizable faces of the Dinwiddie football program will be taking their talent and leadership elsewhere next season as they move on to the college football field

Two of the most recognizable faces of the Dinwiddie football program will be taking their talent and leadership elsewhere next season as they move on to the college football field.

Senior linebacker Jason Ampy and wide receiver Quintaze Jackson both signed national letters of intent last week to make their advancement to the college level official.

Jackson, an All-State selection this season as both a WR and kick returner, will attend Louisburg College in North Carolina, a top junior college program. Jackson will attend the junior college with eyes on using it as a springboard to a Division 1 scholarship in 2 years. The speedy wideout finished last season with 54 catches for 974 yards and 8 TDs. A 3-year starter, “Q-Jack” finishes his career at Dinwiddie with 113 catches for 1882 yards and 18 total TDs.

Dinwiddie head coach Billy Mills was impressed with the program at Louisburg. ”They focus on character and the school provides their players with the academic resources they need. On the field, they are one of the county’s up-and-coming JUCO programs.”

At first, the Louisburg coaches told Coach Mills they weren’t recruiting any wide receivers, but after seeing Jackson’s highlight tape – they quickly changed their tune. ”Their coach (Coach Sala) called me and told me Quintaze was the best receiver they’d seen this season, and they were interested.”

A four-year starter at Dinwiddie, for many Dinwiddie football fans it’s difficult to imagine linebacker Jason Ampy in a different uniform. The Generals defensive stalwart will attend Chowan University in Murfreesboro, North Carolina next season.

“I had a good feeling about Chowan after visiting”, said Ampy. Chowan was late to recruit Ampy, but ultimately he felt the school provided him with the best opportunity.

Ampy was not only a 4-year starter for the Generals, he also started every game during those four years – a rare feat for any varsity football player. A first-team All-Central District unanimous selection 2 years running, Ampy racked up 384 tackles and 5 sacks in his career.

“It’s going to be different without him, looking out on the field and not seeing him out there” said Coach Mills.

Ampy will join former Generals teammate offensive tackle Nick Watts, who also signed with Chowan last season and started as a freshman last season.

While many of the current Dinwiddie football players have only experienced the winning seasons, Ampy and Jackson’s class can still remember those days when winning wasn’t exactly associated with Dinwiddie’s football program. When I asked Ampy what the guys making their way up through the Dinwiddie program need to do to keep the success going, he had a simple, yet powerful answer. ”I just let them know they need to keep working hard. That’s what this program is all about.”
